Amazing Faith
“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” And He said to them, “Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Mat.17:19-20)
During Jesus’ earthly ministry, he quite often used agricultural examples. One of the most well-known illustrations of this is found in the above passage. In an earlier chapter, he had referred to the mustard seed as the smallest of all seeds. In our focal verse, he stresses how powerful even a small amount of faith can be, even powerful enough to move mountains.
Over the course of his three years on earth, Jesus worked many miracles, and on some occasions, he directly related these marvelous works to the faith of humans. In one of these instances, he was approached by a Roman Centurion whose son was paralyzed, and when pleading with Jesus to heal his son expressed his belief that Jesus didn’t even need to come in person but could heal the boy by merely saying “the word.” Scripture tells us that when Jesus heard this confident declaration, he was amazed and said, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.”
For as long as we dwell on earth and inhabit our fallen, fleshly bodies, we will experience trials. Whether our challenges arise from health issues, such as the Centurion’s son had, or one of the many other sources of stress we are confronted with daily, our Lord assures us that even a small amount of faith placed in him can achieve wonderful results.
